n.m.w. 2 ... the civil wars

ARTIST
the civil wars
ALBUM

barton hallow

this music completely blew me away. it's a southern, male female, call in response, gospel-ish, pull on your heart strings sort of band... if that makes any sense.

every new song/video i come across absolutely captivates me. with such a simple broken down setup to the music, i can easily skip past how technically wonderful their song writing and harmonies are. specifically, in the song "poison & wine", just before the two minute mark, as joy williams sings the verse melody, john paul white sneaks in with a harmony that i image most wouldn't pick up on let alone be able to write and perform.

every vocal melody is created with such intent but delivered in such a way, that you would never notice.

go buy this and a bottle of wine... press play, sip and enjoy.

†††

if you like the deftones, or chino marino, you are going to dig this.
crosses
the new side project of deftones lead singer chino marino. crosses offers up a free EP for the taking. just as moody, spacey and textural as any decent chino project. i know you'll enjoy.

did you hear the news about ... tom waits?

heeeee's back!

i'm so excited to see new material from one of my favorite artists. his wacky, diverse musicality has shaped the way i listen to music as a whole.

i was first introduce to him in 2002 with the incredible album "alice."
"go skating on your name... and by tracing it twice, i fell through the ice of alice..."

such great visual lyrics from an amazing story teller. anyway, he is back with a new full length album called "bad as me" 13 tracks...(unless you buy the deluxe edition) and the new single "bad as me" sounds like we are in for a treat.

"bad as me" makes me realize that we are all in the same boat and at least guilty of the same things. "you're the same kind of bad as me".

most likely that's true... i've been know to ruffle some feathers in my time.
anyway the album art for the single looks like...

and the new tune sounds like...

turns out that tom waits is sort of particular about how his music is shared too... you might want to check out this video to make sure you are following all of the new rules.

so that's about it... for now. i'll keep you posted as more is announced.
till next time

n.m.w. number one

the first blog post for "new music wednesdays" has arrived. (sound the trumpets)... every wednesday, i will use this site to share with you a song/album that i can't stop listening to.

SONG
memories from a shore

i recently stumbled upon this track by using an app for my iPad(thanks again matt) called "aweditorium" ... it's a great app, i suggest you go and download it for your iPad for free.

anyway, after hearing the song for just a few seconds, i noticed that the vocals sounded way too familiar. recently, i have been completely stuck on a group called manchester orchestra. their songs are eerie, heartfelt, and at times angry as hell... the sort of anger you only get from a high school breakup or when someone that borrows your pen, puts it in their mouth and then hands it back to you. ugh... i hate that.

realizing that the song i heard on my iPad was being sung by manchester orchestra's andy hull, i instantly hopped on itunes, previewed it  and purchased the disc. i knew if it was as good as the track "memories from a shore" or even anything like manchester orchestra, i was going to be fine with my purchase.

so back to the description... turns out this disc is number two of a three disc concept album. the short of it is the main character of the trilogy is a 17th century sailor who comes home and catches his wife in an act of betrayal with his brother. i am not going to go on and on and site lyrics that support this claim. however, i will state that the chorus to this song packs a punch.

"anna, no. what an embarrassing way to go."

woof... that hurts.
anyway... i love the way he emphasizes "embarrassing". try singing along... it's tough.
so click on my link below and at least give the song a listen.
i hope you enjoy it... check back next wednesday for a new tune!

grab yourself a can of pork soda!!

To think that its's been over 15 years since i first saw a primus concert at the tower theater with my buddy seth.

i can totally remember what got us absolutely hooked... late one night, seth and i were watching music videos on mtv, and out of nowhere, on comes primus' "wynona's big brown beaver." we stood right in front of the tv and didn't make a peep till it was all over. we quickly jotted down the band name and song title and proceeded to figure out who's mom would take us to buy their cd. (funny thing is, i think we bought our copies from "the wall"... i miss those wall stickers.)

anyway... once we bought one, we went out and purchased the rest of their albums and a few tshirts (that we probably wore to the show). a couple weeks later we are down in upper darby pa. getting our first "real" concert experience.

the best part of this is that seth's mom had to drive us to the show... she stayed and rocked out with us... i hope to think that she enjoyed herself.

so i give you the video that started it all... well for us that is.
i wish i could get a personalized duracell costume too!!

and for those of you who have not seen "mr. krinkle"
(i'm pretty sure that i first saw this video at one of those video kiosks at kmart.)

come with us, we'll sail the seas of cheese...

my ernie ball

Music... man.
shot on my iPhone

this is what happens when i get bored...

so here we are...
i record and/or photograph any idea that i have. if it is inspiring, interesting, colorful, catchy or just plain and simple, i digitally record that moment for safe keeping in my iPhone. now that i have way too many digital moments to handle, i think it's time to dust a few off and get them out of my poorly lit back pocket.

this is where you come in...

i enjoy teaching and sharing my ideas with my closest friends... i find this blog to be a good way of keeping my friends interested without talking their ears off... and a way for me not to become an even bigger digital packrat.

this website will be my excuse for being creative visually and sonically... (a.k.a. photos/videos and music... the other way sounded cooler.) this should be a lot of fun, and a nice way for me to express something... anything.

so there you go.
